I tried to read Beowulf a very long time ago, probably in my teens. I didn't get far. Its's not that I wasn't in the mood for epic poetry because in that same era I managed to get through The Song of Roland several times and under my own steam - not as a classroom assignment.
Reading through an excerpt of Seamus Heaney's 1999 translation of Beowulf all these years later went a little more smoothly. It's the second poem in The Norton Anthology of Poetry and it's a pretty engaging one but not enough to make me seek out the full work any time soon. Beowulf will have to wait.
